American Beer List

Last Updated: 30 November 2012

A list of the American beers that I've had...
...and beers that have had me

RATINGS ARE BASED ON HOW I FEEL THAT THEY PORTRAYED THE STYLE, AS OPPOSED TO HOW I LIKED IT. MY LIKING DOES HOWEVER INFLUENCE THE RATING EVER-SO-SLIGHTLY...

===MY TOP 3 BEERS ON THIS LIST===
1. Terrapin - Wake'n'Bake
2. The Alchemist - Heady Topper
3.
========================
===TOP IPA===
The Alchemist - Heady Topper

-----UNITED STATES

-21st Amendment Brewery | San Francisco, CA-
Allies Win The War! (Collaboration with Ninkasi Brewing Company) | Can | A+ | Anthracite - Wilkes-Barre, PA | 22FEB12
Dark amber brown-bite IPA. Strong ale. Carbonation is present. Creamy head but light as a feather. Floats in at 8.5%! I don't really know what dates taste like, especially California dates, but the flavor is not sour and not sweet. It's actually hinting at Belgian water. Frigin' awesome. This could pass as a Belgian/American collaboration brown ale, IPA, slight winter warmer. This is probably due to the fact that it's an English Strong Ale. Well pulled off!
Fireside Chat | Can | B+ | Plaza Beverage - Pittston, PA 29JULY11 |
I believe this review is conditional because the beer was on the clearance rack probably from last year (2010) and being it wasn't very high alcohol, it may not have aged well; it was a bit sour... just a bit. I've had beers that intentionally tasted like this so it may have been normal. Either way, it was enjoyable for me, but not what it could have been. Also, to others around me, it WASN'T enjoyable -  hey, what could I say, I like beer. The 6-pack can tote-thing they sold this in was awesome. Really peaked my interest which is why we bought it, too bad it was conditional. ...It was different...
Brew Free! Or Die IPA | Can | A+ | Plaza Beverage - Pittston, PA | 20JUL12
21st Amendment totally redeemed itself after Fireside Chat [see above]. With keeping in tradition, I bought this for camping, just like fireside chat. I was blown away at how good it was. It's got a spike to it, a bitterness, but its very very smooth. Not too carbonated, not too harsh. It was perfect for Summertime. Buy it.

-The Alchemist | Waterbury, VT |
Heady Topper | Can | A+> | TRADE | 13DEC11
This was probably my favorite IPA -  I say that without any conditions. EVERYTHING about this: the can, the design, the smell, the sound of the damn can opening for god's sake, was perfect. Lots of floaters in this one, and with those floaters came lots of flavor. WOW. Whoever The Alchemist is, well... he better not EVER get coal in his stocking. I remember there being a strong pine/xmas tree smell wofting outward from this. I went against the rules on this and drank from a glass (it says drink from the can). Gotta treat this one nice. This is easily on my top 3 of all time thus far.

Brown Ale | Draft | B | Classic Beer Festival at Split Rock Resort 2010
Christmas Ale (2009) | Bottle | |
Jocamo IPA | Bottle | | Classic Beer Festival at Split Rock Resort 2010 |
Pecan Harvest Ale | Bottle | A | Classic Beer Festival at Split Rock Resort 2010 |
Purple Haze | | Draft | Beer Boys - Wilkes-Barre, PA (?) |
I remember there being some kinds of not-yet-ripe sour/sweet fruits in here but more ripe sugar fruits; so a mixture of both, just more of one type. Good, but I feel like the name tries to sell to the unaware.
Mojo IPA | Draft | | Classic Beer Festival at Split Rock Resort 2010 2010 |

Vanilla Doubledog | Bottle | A+ | ? | 02OCT12
Little bit-a 'nilla wafer, little bit-a dark ale, little bit-a Abita. It's like a porter, like a stout, like a brown ale. Vanilla beans are definitely present too. You would enjoy this. AND NO!, It's not too sweet. It's frigin' perfect, and yr a jerk if you think otherwise.

-Alesmith Brewing Co. | San Diego, CA-
Alesmith Old Numbskull | Bottle | A+ | Aurants - Duryea, PA |
Alesmith Speedway Stout | Bottle | A | Aurants - Duryea, PA | 31DEC11/01JAN12
Maybe it was hyped too much on a radio show, or maybe it was the glass it was drank from... This didn't live up to everything it was made out to be. I can't sware by this beer, no way, but I can definitely say I thoroughly enjoyed it and would buy it again, I just wouldn't put it up there in the top 5 (which is what I was expecting)

-Appalachian Brewing Co. | Harrisburg, PA-
Batch 666 | Draft | B+ | Appalachian Brewing Co. Brewery | 11NOV11 |
When I asked what style this was at the brewery, the response was "A Frankenstein." The bartender said that it was originally calculated at like 20-something % (!) but it is listed @ 7-something %. On tap, it DEFINITELY had me fooled at being above 7%, in fact, I will argue with them that it was NOT 7%. Whoever wrote this is a liar. It was atleast 10%, I'm sure of it. Anyway, it was weird, it did taste like a mixture of different styles. It is also listed as a Winter Warmer but tasted NOTHING like a Barleywine, it was more like a stout in character. This beer is obviously shrouded in mystery.

Vanilla Java Porter | Draft | A+ | Aurants - Duryea, PA |
It smells like a dank dirty northeast PA basement with a damp wet dirt floor. Think about changing the water heater! Now the taste, well... That's something completely different.. Not a lot of coffee at all but the vanilla is there but not overpowering. It's actually a very well balanced porter if I may say. It's great. What a review, huh? It's light too. There, now I believe I covered it all.

-Bell's Brewery | Kalamazoo, MI-
Special Double Cream Stout | Bottle | B+ | Backyard Ale House - Scranton, PA |
Two-Hearted Ale | Bottle | A+ |
If I had to pick which was better: Cigar City Jai Alai IPA or Bell's Two-Hearted... I might have a mental breakdown before I could decide. These 2 will forever form a continuous loop in my head with my response being a constant, "but wait...!" --So much character in this beer; so smooth, such a good smell, not too strong, just perfect. GREAT for tailgating before a show.

Literally, this is an oatmeal stout. That's it. If anyone ever asks me, "What's an OATMEAL stout like?" I would have no hesitation to recommend this one. No bells and whistles (which may turn some off) just pure oatmeal stout. You guys NAILED it. Museum potential.

The hops, oh my god. Has centennial hops, I believe... Sweet beer, literally. Not too malty, but it is a bit yeasty. This is a good thing.

Hazed & Infused | Bottle | A |
Ah yes, another one where the name tries to sell itself. Please don't think about the movie when drinking this. There's not much more that I remember about this one. Was it good? You bet.
Killer Penguin Barleywine 2010 | Bottle | A+ | Aurants - Duryea, PA |
Red wax over the bottle cap really set the mood off right for this. This was my favorite Barleywine I've ever had. I think what did it was the sweetness and how it balanced that tried and true love/hate barleywine flavor.
Mojo Risin' American Double IPA | Bottle | A+ | Aurants - Duryea, PA |
Smell is extremely floral when cold; smells fantastic and is definitely a good indication of what lies within (Prominent pre-IPA smile-my face may stick like this one day). Over time, the floral smell becomes something of masked anise/licorice.

Potbelly Pumpkin Ale | Bottle | | Anthracite - Wilkes-Barre, PA | 22FEB12
The first ever pumpkin beer I've had that was based on PUMPKIN rather than pumpkin pie/spices. Very good stuff. The only other one I'd compare the FLAVOR to is the Rock Art Extreme Pumpkin Stout, but this ale is not stout in nature. The only thing constant is the flavor. It was dark amber/orange/brown and very nice.

Pumpkin | Draft | A | Brownie's - Philadelphia, PA | 21SEP12
Creamy, but only slightly. Light spices, not pumpkin pie, more like pumpkin. I LOVED that aspect. "Pumpkin Ale" is way too general of a term for beer categories. It should be pumpkin ale, or pumpkin spice ale. This was definitely just a pumpkin ale that had SLIGHT spice to it. Perfection. It was light in color. In the creaminess, I got teases of Manayunk Hop Phanatic in the body and mouthfeel. Haunting. Extremely good.

Now THIS is a scottish ale... I should have taken (better) notes when I was drinking it because I really don't have much to say about this... I would definitely order this one again if that helps.

This was an extremely smooth and extremely mild IPA. VERY sessionable and accessible. NOT a bad thing at all. I couldn't believe how mild it was... The IBUs were probably in the 30's, and no WAY above 40. A great beer; very happy with it.

Blacorn Unidragon | Bottle | A+ | Aurants - Duryea, PA | 13FEB12
Let's mate a black unicorn and a soul dragon. This beer's got soul... LOTS of character, wow. Does a VERY WELL JOB of hiding the alcohol. If I didn;t read the label, I NEVER would've known. That's remarkable. ....I think I heard the faint sound of squeaking horn shoes with every sip....
Chocolate Sombrero | Bottle | A | Aurants - Duryea, PA | 16JUN12
Amazing. This is everything you think it would be: Chocolatey, SLIGHTLY SLIGHTLY spicy, cinnamon-y....
Clementine | Bottle | | Aurants - Duryea, PA | 08JUL12
Eagle Claw Fist | Bottle | A+ | Aurants - Duryea, PA | 14SEP12
Malty and VERY hoppy.
Flight Of The Pimp | Draft | | Aurants - Duryea, PA | 24AUG12
Imperial Brown Ale! WOW. I don't recall ever having an IMPERIAL brown ale (quite like this). It was extremely strong. I felt like it had to be more cold (than warm) to drink it. From the get-go you can tell it was a brown ale, except when you taste it, there's an alcohol heat level that isn't normally present. The taste was quite profound with bitter coffee, bitter chocolate, and slight sweetness.
Hoppy Feet 1.5 | Draft | A+ | Aurants - Duryea, PA | 25FEB12
This is without a doubt the most hoppy stout I've ever had. Fine line between black IPA and this... I would go as far as to say that this is a hybrid style; a but, if you will. A touch of sweetness but if only to balance the bitterness. Coffee, but black as black can be, cocoa powder (not chocolate). The back of my tongue is weeping happy tears from the bitterness present. The heat, bitterness, and sweetness worked together like santa's elves; water and soap; flames and fuel vapors. AWESOME.
Pimp | Draft | | Aurants - Duryea, PA | XXAUG12
Pimp | Bottle | A+ | Aurants - Duryea, PA | 27DEC12
Vampire Slayer | Bottle | A+ | Aurants - Duryea, PA | XXFEB12
BARREL-AGED GOODNESS! The wood is rumored to have been used by Buffy The Vampire Slayer to slay... well... the bad guys... Actually, it's not really rumored, I just like to think it was. It's definitely tough enough to anyway...

This black beer ale had a very distinct taste. I've only had one other encounter with "it" and I haven't quite put my finger on it... It's like a fresh... I want to say plastic-like taste BUT THAT'S NOT A BAD PLASTIC taste, I just can't pull up the word or taste on my look-up table.

At first smell, I say it smells like some kind of alien'd celery. Upon taste, there's that celery again only now there's more realization that wherever that celery came from sure is a sugary sweet planet. Now, this planet is not MADE of sugar, it's just in season when the things that mate in this beer...well.... mate. It's so good when just released, but trust me, it NEEDS to age. Do yourself a favor and practice the zen art of "beer hoarding". They're like Pokemon. Just collect them and pull them out when you want to whoop someone's ass (and probably your own). LET IT AGE! We'll compare our brain waves.
Bitches Brew | Bottle | A+> | Aurants - Duryea, PA |
Where to begin with this one.... hmm... So many layers. First off, it's a russian imperial stout: WIN. Second, the label is the cover of bitches brew: WIN. Third, it's CALLED bitches brew: WIN. When you sip this beer, it should be illegal if you're not listening to the album. The before-it's-time album literally will send you on a side quest while your mouth is searching for something to stare at (for orientation). Impossible, I know, your mouth doesn't have eyes, but you may think differently after this one.
Chicory Stout | Bottle | A+ | Aurants - Duryea, PA |
I feel that this gets more credit than it deserves. It's very good, but it seems basic for what it claims to be. I definitely want to try this again.

I can't believe how LIGHT in color and body this is for the flavor of the beer. The only other beer that comes to mind that has succeeded in the phenomena is Furthermore Oscura. There is a cola-like head on this beer (only just a bit more foamy) -- it's there, and then it's not. This is definitely a unique smelling beer which I believe is due to the ancho chilies. The taste up front is sweet, there's definitely chocolate but with a big rush of honey. Not quite mead, bit it's definitely honey. There's definitely some chilies here but I did not get ANY heat from them, only the pepper taste. I was trying to compare heat with Terrapin/Schmaltz Reunion Ale '12 and my only findings were complete opposites. Of course, the warmer it gets, the more flavor, but the weird thing was that there weren't MORE flavors, just STRONGER flavors. That was really neat.
Twenty | Bottle | B+ | Aurants - Duryea, PA | 30DEC11
Very very light and pale but what's good is that there's definitely a unique character here. It MUST be the currants, which I have NEVER had in any form before, until in this beer. I give it a B+ because i'm not too fond of a lighter body beer. Thing is, this was HINTING on a pilsner.
Worldwide Stout | Draft | A+ | Backyard Ale House - Scranton, PA |
May I start by saying, "Holy crap, it's a malt beverage". I believe it's about 18%. It does a pretty well job of hiding the heat but be smart and have one!

...twas the hour before the concert and all through the house, not an irishman to be seen, nor heard, and not even his mouse... actually, there were some irishmen there when I had this. It was definitely inbetween the Chelsea Hop Angel (the same night) and a Cigar City Jai Alai. Not as smooth as the chelsea but definitely not very bitter. Middle-of-the-road deliciousness.

Has the taste of ginger-ale minus the sweetness ; lemon peel @ cold temperature, orange peel @ room temperature...citrus constant. Smells of Hoegaarden/Belgian Wit but that just means that they got the style right.

Ok, wait now. I thought this said Rye IPA. It tastes like a Barleywine!! Hey, that''s no big dea, of course but it took my by surprise. Very good. A bit sweeter than expected, very thick consistency, looks like apple cider. Hoppy, and well.... very barleywine-esque.
"Tastes like a barleywine, borderline. Barleywine/IPA. Definitely rye here. Very nutty -- the nutty flavor of the bottle."

Ah yes, the breakfast stout. This one for me only serves as a direct replacement when Wake'n'bake is out of season. This beer deserves better and I feel terrible. It's so good. Slightly hoppy, mega coffee, slight chocolate, slight slight vanilla, a bit of dark chocolate. Very smooth and almost no heat... Ahhhh yes...
Centennial IPA | Draft | B+ | Aurants - Duryea, PA |
Quite basic IPA. It was bitter -- IBUs were probably in the 80's-90's but I'm just giving a ballpark number. It can be summed up quite easily: Not a lot of sweetness, but tons of hops. If that's yr bag, then you've it the jackpot. Very enjoyable, but nothing special IMHO.

Weird, but it smells like Christmas tree beads. Dry hopped, but very wet feeling and very light bodied. Flavroful, but cleanses the pallet. This is not exactly what I expected mead to taste like but I am extremely impressed at how it does taste. It has the character of Welch's sparkling white grape juice, only slightly less carbonation -- very similar. It's got a huge grapefruit bitterness taste. It's awesome.

Christmas in a bottle. WOW. If you want to have a "Seasonal Party" This is what you need: Pumking, Frosted Frog, Jai Alai IPA, Hop Karma Brown IPA. You will literally celebrate every season in one night with those 4 beers. You might not survive the mind warp/head rush that you experience. I dare not try it myself... Why? no! not death, but more the fact that I might not be able to drink Frost Frog ever again! Share with someone and talk about scotch tape, and in-laws and a good night will follow.

So, so thin, like an ale, but it's a stout. I don't really know how to react to this. I guess if it wasn't labeled a stout, i'd still say it was, but i'd have my doubts and not be sure. The smell is coffee to the balls, but not to the heart. It's definitely a good coffee stout. with a slight head the way I poured it... It was a coffee stout; they nailed it.

Smells like gummy worms and a LITTLE BIT like cotton candy. After spicy smoky chicken, it took on the flavor of maraschino cherries and maple. It's dangerously delicious. I began to get chocolate covered cherries in there too as it caught up to the rooms temperature. Chocolate layer is very slight but it's there. It's got to be the character of the real Vermont maple syrup. I get a very similar flavor from the granola at the hotel.

The label on this beer perfectly describes what happens when you sip this beer. Whether this was intentional or not lies a mystery. This beer literally is trying to rip itself apart into 2 separate entities. You have a pilsner and an ale acting as oil and water pushing against each other yet they perfectly compliment one another. Perfect. This is the most unique beer I've ever had.

I had this at a friend's house sometime in June 2012, but never documented it. This is surprisingly good for the price. I believe it ranks with the "other" adjunct lagers in price. You almost can't go wrong at a party in terms of taste if you showed up with this. Is it amazing? No. Is it sessionable? Well, let's just say buy the case, not the six-pack. It has a different taste than the others, but it's not a bad taste. I like ti think that it differentiates itself by that quality -- makes it stand alone.

Well, in rating of the EXPERIENCE with this beer: It was corked, great... Uncorking this thing? Well, let's start off by the strange omen that was 6 turns of the cork cage (as opposed to 7). I should've known then but hey... I wanted beer. So here I go trying to get the cork off... 2 thumbs, work them around the cork while pushing up. NO! off flies the top part of the cork leaving the stem down in the neck of the bottle. GREAT! So out comes the wine opener, twist, twist, twist... aaannnddd pull up, and.... now there's a hole in the cork, but the cork's still in the neck!... Needless to say, I got it out, but WOW. How was the beer? The beer was everything you'd think of this style... Carbonated, light in color, nice head, a bit of sour fruits and that ameri-belgian (leaning more toward belgian nice-frigin-job!) taste. Ommegang and Lost Abbey are definitely good at replicating authentic Belgians. I really enjoyed this one (after I got it open)...

This is one of, if not the ONLY beer that I've had, this unique. It took me almost 2 weeks to put my finger on the fact that it is ORANGE PEEL that is putting this flavor at such a high mystery. It is also one of the most smooth, creamy beers ever. It is classifed as an amber/red ale, but it is black as a porter and hoppy like an IPA. It';s like a black IPA, but it's fruity. It's so frigin' weird. If you EVER see this at the bar, get it and you'll see what i'm talking about. Key words: Smooth, Hoppy, Orange Peel, Creamy. You shall see.

On the sticker is a girl with a big, almost revealed rack, she has a beer in her hand, she looks seductive and will continue to look at you that way no matter how drunk you get. Furthermore, this beer is an IPA, it's smooth and not TOO hoppy, I don't think that it's filtered (I dont remember), and it's among my favorite IPAs ever. To YARDS IPA: start taking notes, you idiots. Amen.

Bitter as a horses petute. Well, it does say that on the bottle if you read it. It also goes on to mention that the horse is wearing a tu-tu and that that's what it's like at the end. Well, River Horse you nailed it. Grabs you by the tongue in the beginning and then teeters on the brink of OH MY... and then leans and slides right off the back of your tongue gracefully. Great stuff here.
Tripel Horse | Bottle | A+> | TRADE |
This tripel and Brother David's are my favorite tripels. That banana-like flavor and smell is amazing. It does an extremely well job of hiding the alcohol too... Not a lot of heat at all considering it's 10% handle.
NOTE: Drank one of these from mid-2011, on 16MAR2012. WAY different after some more fermentation. There was a STRONG butterscotch thing going on and some caramel. Also, the alcohol heat was cranked way up! Overall, it was almost a night and day difference -  if blindfolded, I wouldn't guess it was Tripel Horse. If I could go higher than A+> on the rating, I would. Wish I had more!

Pumpkin Imperial Stout Extreme '12 | Bottle | A | Aurants - Duryea, PA | 20SEP12 |
Hoppy. It's like a black IPA but it's rated at 50 IBUs. If you like IPA, and stouts, you will like this. I recommend having it a bit warmer than cold. If you did what I did, it was open it right up from the cooler, and have at it. At this point, it is Hoppy, slightly sour, and slightly stout-like. Going forward, after cheesy food, it began to pace with the room's temperature. At THIS point, it became less hoppy and more sweet and even more stout-like. It morphed before my eyes/pallet. I think I like it better than 2010 -- maybe it's the same, maybe not. It is similar in respect to the happiness/black IPA though, I do remember that. Pumpkin is still non-existent! Have at it ladies and gents.

Tons of small floaters; confetti. It's a party and yet the bottle/label looks so docile/proud/triumphant/proper/stern. It's as if the depiction on the LABEL is the post party or victory whereas the BEER is the pre-, or "during" what happened to cause the label mood. I can't help but feel like by opening the beer and pouring it out, I let out the chaos that had just finally been contained. I just opened a prison and many lives were lost in vain. I feel like everyone involved in capturing this thing walks out from behind stage, takes a bow and the audience erupts in applause; it was all in good fun. At the first taste I feel like I'm at a Furthur show or RatDog show. The explosion of that-kind-of-hop is amazing. I don't know how they captured it. It's PURE HEMP and it tastes so damn good. In fact, I was able to envision myself searching for a case of this ASAP. It's bitter, oh yes it is, but the sweetness dives through a hoop like the dog on the label. I raise my fist to you in peace, Rogue. This is my second interaction with this and I enjoyed it way more this time for some reason. Maybe it's the good company...

Smells of an IPA for sure. I'm technically blind-folded because my bed-head hair hangs in my eyes on this morning @ 0750. Wih that being said, yes even blind-folded, I can tell that this is an IPA. It's a bit sweeter than others and probably 70-80 IBU. This = perfection. Hey, it's still better than (Scrap) Yards' IPA, but then again, everything is. I would get this again definitely. Good stuff... One of the better Octoberfest styles. What do I mean? Well, it you're looking for SPICE, go elsewhere, if you're looking for something along the lines of Saranac Pumpkin, you've come to the right place.

WOW. You get a slap of lemon with this. Perfectly compliments the citrusy hoppiness of the beer. I cannot wait to find this again. Stockpile this stuff!! AMAZING!!

The oak is not very prominent in that from what I can recall from a regular arrogant bastard when juxtaposed to this one. Don't get me wrong, this beer is awesome in its own way but I feel that the oak was hyped and then let me down. The beer as a whole however... well, I will definitely get it again (and probably over the regular arrogant bastard).

Very hoppy, yet it wasn't an IPA. Very refreshing and light bodied, but full of flavor. The most flavorful of the day's tastings in my opinion.
Golden Lager | Draft | A | Brewery Tour | 13AUG12
You know, they nailed the style. Definitely. But i'm not a big fan of it just because you can tell that it's brewed with the masses in mind. This is their flagship, I think.
"HYBRID STYLE" | Draft | | Brewery Tour | 13AUG12
I don't know anything about this beer other than that it is some kind of hybrid style they're working on. As is, it will not be released to the public. What I can say, is that I said to the brewmaster, "Wow, this is good, it tastes like there's some dark sour cherries in it." He replied, "well there's definitely no cherries in there..."
Unfilitered Octoberfest| Draft | | Brewery Tour-direct from giant cask | 13AUG12
This was so malty. I loved it. It hadn't been filtered yet when I drank it straight from the large vat/cask. May be one of my top session-ables in this style. I would have no problem bringing this over a friend's house for a night. The color was orange, just as you would expect. It's a great beer.

So good. That whole brewed with maple syrup thing is just AWESOME. It's very apparent that it's there. A brown ale with maple syrup is a no-brainer, why don't more do this? Oh, I know, because noone else should be allowed to traverse this hallowed ground. Don't dare attempt this art.

Big Shot Espresso Stout | Bottle | A | TRADE | 30AUG12
What I liked about this beer was that it was just like I like my coffee: Black, bitter, and smooth. It was lacking sweetness, and that's exactly what was different about it. Every other coffee stout, or espresso stout had it based on the fact that people like their coffee with creamer and sugar. This was JUST coffee. Excellent. Thoroughly enjoyed this one.

Labyrinth Black Ale | Bottle | A+ | Backyard Ale House - Scranton, PA |
This should be served with a ladle for serving with. "Gravy boat puzzled maze ale". This one was very high gravity and from what I can remember about it (remember is key word) it did a fairly well job of hiding the alcohol; you atleast wouldn't know it was ABOVE 12%...which it was.

A very cream taste, and this is why I do not like it. I THINK that flavor is cream. It's the same reason/taste why Bell's double cream stout is on my love/hate relationship. I would also like to say: Come on, Victory, you can do better than this. Keep the entry level stout for the Guiness people.
